3 Fingerprint Features A fingerprint is a pattern of curving line structures called n'dges, where the skin has a higher profile than its surroundings. which are called the valleys. In most fingerprint images, the ridges are black and the valleys are white. Due to all kinds of noise and distortions, fingerprints cannot be matched simply by taking the cross-correlation or the Euclidean distance of the gray scale images. Features are thus extracted from the fingerprints that are more invariant to the distortions.

3 shows a photo of part of such a system. This application presents several special challenges. First, the recognition of wet fingers gives rise to various problems. Fingerprint images from wet fingers lead to decreased image qUality. This problem is enhanced by the fact that the layer of fat at the skin is reduced by an extended stay in the water. Various fingerprint sensors were used, but none of them yielded a satisfactory image quality. Also, water causes the skin to fit less tightly around the finger, resulting in above-average elastic distortions of the fingerprint, thereby decreasing the matching perfonnance.
