This paintings bargains with mechanical production approaches in background, tested throughout the machines linked to these methods. a device is just incorporated whether it is a part of a laptop software, with units made from relocating elements. as soon as the analytical box has been marked out, the selected descriptive strategy is essentially image. This ancient compendium makes an attempt to offer a wide-angle view of historic improvement with no making an in-depth research of every of the examples provided. furthermore, this booklet illustrates the historic improvement of machines and mechanisms extra from a technical standpoint instead of a strictly background of technological know-how standpoint because the authors are mechanical engineers who're and prompted to check the main major proof of their personal quarter of information of the idea of Machines and Mechanisms. an entire figuring out of the ancient improvement of know-how additionally wishes assistance from specialists in technical issues who can relish and reconsider bygone achievements within the mild in their personal technical wisdom. extra collaboration among technological know-how historians and technical specialists is required, as is presently the case within the box of commercial Archaeology. hence, this booklet can be an try and set out a technical method of the old improvement of machines and mechanisms, yet with out too many technical info that may hinder its figuring out being merely historic. at the start of every bankruptcy there's a international connection with the interval embraced, the main correct evidence, and the main major treatises within the context of computing device historical past. Following this advent every one bankruptcy features a sequence of sections at the kinds of machines which are consultant of the interval analysed including illustrations to accompany the textual content. a pretty broad bibliography permits the reader to make a deeper old research.

B. V. 2010 19 20 2 Chinese Inventions and Machines In textile engineering, the book entitled “Keng Chih Thu” (“Drawings of Ploughing and Weaving”, 1149) is an example of the great developments that was reached in silk manufacturing. Chinese influence in surrounding countries was reflected at all levels, both scientific and cultural. An excellent example in the machinery field is the Japanese tea-serving automaton where the mechanics and assembly precision somehow overcame Chinese techniques. With a few exceptions, there was no custom in Chinese culture of providing texts with drawings even though they dealt with technical matters.

This “water wheel for heavy weights”, as it is called in Chinese books, made its first appearance in the book “The Nong Shu”. 9 has several differences: instead of having bamboo buckets attached to the water wheel, they are fixed to each other by a rope, and the chain moves around the wheel where the bottom one is driven by the water and the upper one is used to realise the water. Curiously, one of the most often-mentioned machines in ancient Chinese books is the drop-hammer water-driven machine.

The clock is decorated with a human figure pointing to the hours on a column. The level of water in the cylinder moves a float up or down, together with the human figure. From the cylinder, the water passed through a U-shaped pipe and fell into a drum that was divided into compartments. When a compartment became full, the drum rotated slowly together with the column marking the hours. This rotation was produced by a gear transmission using several gears with several speed reduction ratios. Ctesibius used to decorate his machines with moving figures, like automatons.
